The history
The history of Generacion goes over 20 years back. Over the years many things have happened, we have helped a lot of children but many children also have been lost. Because of resistance from the government in Lima, and because of financially problems Generacions have suffered big lost the last couple of years.
It all started with the sociologic Lucy Borja meeting some children who lived on the street. Choked of the conditions the children were living under, she invited them to stay in her office, and told them to invite all of their friends. This of cause ended with over 200 children living in a little office and of cause this was not satisfying. Lucy started Generacion, and many were interested in helping out making a different for the street children of Lima.
Many years later Generacion had four houses and gave home to over 200 children. The biggest house in Magdalena gave home to over a hundred children, with food, education and classes in ceramic, art and music. Another house in San Miguel gave home to girls who had been in prostitution and their children. The girls helped run the house by running a bakery. The house in Pueblo Libre gave home to the older children who also worked out of the house. Beside the houses Generacion has a functionally work on the streets, doing reatchout work, and projects in the streets.
But Generacion had a lot of opposition. In Lima many people still see the children as thieves and many do not appreciate the job Generacion was doing. The problem was that Generacion was working with open doors, giving the children permission to leave the house.
Especially in Magdalena the neighbor’s was complaining, not wanting street children to live in their district. The whole thing escalated in 2006 when the mayor of Magdalena send over 60 police officers to the house in Magdalena, and trough the children on the street. They just closed the house, living the children to their own fate. The house was a gift to Generacion and is legally theirs, but they don’t have permission to use it. Still Generacion has a trail running, to get the right to use their house. This trail in process is being financially supported by Safe the children Sweden, as has been going on for almost three years.
In frustration Lucy Borja moved the youngest children to her house I San Batolo. After a while the found a house in san Batolo where now 20 kids had their home. Later also the house in Pueblo Libre was closed of the mayor in that district, but in more quietly ways.
Be cause of economically problems Generacion only have on house today. Big sponsors have been pulling out of the project as their in many organizations all over the world have been a change in how and why a project is worth supporting. The house is in San Batolo but has recently been renewed out as the rent was rising.
Despite of the many bumps on the road for Generacion, we keep on fighting for the rights of children and for the goal to give the children a home and an education.
